FILTH! Reel Four

Placing together queer history and queer presence in Cinema, we ask you to enter and expand the annals of Queer Film. With this series we showcase queer erotica past and present, centralizing queer desire to remind us of our histories. From vintage arthouse pornos, 90 backroom home movies, 00s web boom, we contextualize queer desire through multiple lenses. As we fight for physical queer spaces today and find ourselves equipped with cameras/computers in our pockets and generations of underseen queer history at our disposal, where do we go?

FILTH! presented by SEEN: A series

At present the FILTH! Series consists of 4 programming blocks with run time ~60-75 minutes. We have shown all 4 in Chicago and Austin, plus Reel 1 in New York City! Other iterations of the FILTH! Series have shown in Milwaukee, with a more direct community approach through matinee events, workshops, and open floor community conversation. The following information is specific to Reel 4, additional reels can be screened after a first event. *Reel 1 is available on VHS via VXPX*
While currently donation and self funded. We work directly with the artists, who have agreed to share their work for a percentage share at each new venue the program screens. These films are interspliced with archival clips from The Vault. Our approach tries to make moving image art accessible to all, while making it sustainable work for ourselves as working class artists and programmers. About SEEN

SEEN is a queer coalition of moving image makers, researchers, and curators who aim to disrupt the system of pay to show festivals and censored queer spaces. Through collaboration with other community driven and alternative art spaces, SEEN highlights self defined and nonconformist works to build a foundation for the rise of the Cinematic Gaze/Gayz.

FILTH! Reel 4
Our finale screening, as premiered in Chicago, this reel of FILTH! has food fucking scenes (joint & solo), homosexual creatures lurking in the night, fetishism of media and men, and a transbian hyper pop fueled uhaul narrative. This special Austin addition hosted Mommy during intermission, who dealt with our audiences perversions by doling out funishments of spankings and motorboats!

Lavender Red - Cody Merrick (he/him) | Boston| (7:18)

A twisting leather-clad trip of sex and power, Lavender Red is an experimental short film satirizing the demonization of gay men and the rhetoric used against them in 1980s America. The much shorter and less explicit original was featured in the Queer Artists Collective 2023 gallery exhibition 'Birthed In The Bathhouse' at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Food Fuck! & Just A Little Taste by Jacquie Ray (she/they) |Los Angeles| (04:01, 3:51)

Both these films as well as a significant amount of my work involve food and sex. Growing up food/eating were not things to indulge in, especially if you wanted to enjoy sexual experiences, it was like you shouldn’t have 1 if you want to have the other. So now my work brings the 2 together, food and sex should be indulged and why not together? Just A Little Taste and Food Fuck! show you the pleasure of merging food and sex into one sexy moment.

Spliced between these contemporary films, we showcase segments of works of decades past that create a throughline of queerness, self expression, and media over decades. The clips are curated to match thematically to the current works.Reel 4 featured Food Fuck provided by Chicago’s BIJOU(World.com)
Some of the other included shorts came from an ACT UP campaign in 1989: Gay Men's Health Crisis project NYC. "A series of erotic and explicit shorts combine the driving rhythms of music videos with slick, rapidly edited images. Scenarios include how-tos on using a condom, supplementing fun with food, and making it in the back seat." These shorts are available online through Tactical Media Files
